In 1983 the National Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks began a fundraising effor to restore the statue which had become damaged by wind and salt water erosion.  The initial donation from the Elks was given to former United States president, Gerald Ford (also an Elk member) in 1985.  To date Elks U. S. A. has donated $1,400,000 to the project.
