The Elks & Lady Liberty

The Elks & Lady Liberty

In 1982, the Statue of Liberty–Ellis Island Foundation was created to lead private sector efforts to renovate and preserve the Statue of Liberty for its 100th anniversary in 1986. In 1983, in response to the foundation’s call for donations, the Elks pledged to provide $1 million toward the effort. On December 14, 1985, the Order made good on its promise—the first charitable organization to do so—and by 1986, it had donated a total of nearly $1.4 million toward the restoration effort.
